Going Further: the Partnerships Behind Awaken Canada

Thanks to nationwide partnerships and creative collaborations, Flyover guests can now explore some of the country’s most secluded and spectacular locations aboard Awaken Canada.

Flyover’s production team travelled across the country over the course of five years in search of stunning scenery and captivating stories for Awaken Canada. Stops included far-reaching and tough-to-access destinations, like Newfoundland’s Pissing Mare Falls, the Northwest Territories’ Cirque of the Unclimbable, and Nunavut’s Mount Asgard and Baffin Island.

Parks Canada provided invaluable support to the team all along the way, including suggestions and advice on filming locations, liaison services in the field, filming permits and supervision to ensure environments were captured with care.

"The ability to partner with Parks Canada on this mammoth undertaking enabled us to film in multiple locations that would have been impossible to reach independently,” says Flyover’s chief operating officer and executive producer Lisa Adams.

“With their support and guidance, we were able to showcase parts of Canada that are somewhat unknown, and in a lot of cases, unseen. These special and unique locations helped to make Awaken Canada a truly memorable and emotional tribute to this magnificent country."

For Parks Canada, the partnership also offered unique opportunities. Helen Davies, Parks Canada’s executive director for British Columbia and Yukon, explains that working with Flyover opened new avenues in sharing treasured locations with guests otherwise unable to experience them.

“Through new and innovative programs and services, and the use of technology, Parks Canada’s collaboration with Flyover is helping to make national parks accessible to as many people as possible,” says Davies.

“By enabling Canadians and visitors from across the world to be introduced to Parks Canada administered places through participation in Flyover experiences, audiences can discover and develop a strong sense of connection, understanding and appreciation of protected places in Canada.”

An Adventure Worth Sharing

Collaboration was key in elevating this all-new Canada journey, according to Sherpas Cinema’s David Mossop, the writer and director behind Awaken Canada. By working with government agencies and community partners who know their homes better than anyone, Flyover was able to create an adventure that's true-to-place.

"The beauty of Awaken Canada's remote and remarkable locations is made possible through dedicated stewardship, both by Parks Canada and the Indigenous Peoples that have called this place home for centuries,” Mossop says. “Flyover is grateful to showcase traditional, ancestral and unceded Indigenous territory across this vast nation.”

Ultimately, these partnerships speak to one of Awaken Canada’s main messages. As Mossop explains, highlighting the beauty of the country is important, but so is showcasing how fragile these environments are.

“The hope for me is that we are inspired to protect more of Canada and create more national parks for all of us, including future generations, to enjoy,” says Mossop.

It’s a sentiment echoed by Davies and the Parks Canada team, and one that they hope will have a lasting effect in the years ahead.

“By building connections to these places, we can help foster the stewards of tomorrow,” says Davies.
